In West Africa, the issue of processing raw materials is becoming urgent, as it is linked both to the disappearance of traditional know-how and to the rise in poverty. This paradox leads to the loss of beauty in the everyday environment, as well as to the vanishing of unique traditional and artistic knowledge. Animism allows objects to be infused with a soul, with the hand and tool as the means of transmission. These elements guide the spirit surely and fearlessly towards a harmony with matter, which we call Art.
“Surrealism in the Great Lakes” is a proposal stemming from the collaboration of Aissa Dione and Nelson Niyakire, who serve as the curators for this exhibition.
The Atiss Dakar Gallery aims to foster a dialogue and bridge between West and East Africa through art. This exhibition invites us to explore a diverse and often overlooked artistic scene in the Great Lakes regions of Africa.
It takes us on a dreamlike journey through ancient beliefs that collide with the new myths of the modern world. It is a voyage into a twisted and fantasized intimacy that the artists encourage us to discover through each artwork, reflecting an ever-evolving questioning.
Conceived as a stroll through intersecting and observing psyches, this exhibition engages in a dialogue with an elusive purpose.
