The Washi Typha project aims to transform typha, an invasive plant threatening the Senegal River, into eco-friendly handmade paper. Drawing inspiration from both Japanese (washi) and African craft traditions, the project seeks to restore ecosystems while generating income for local communities, particularly women in Maka-Diama. Led by Franco-Senegalese artist Ousmane Bâ, it combines ecology, art, and economic empowerment through training programs, the production of sustainable paper, and the creation of collaborative artworks showcased in Senegal and internationally.
