Aliou Diack is a Senegalese artist, living and working in Dakar, Senegal. Born in 1987 in Sidi Bougou (region Mbour), Diack develops a very early fascination for his environment and exploration of “mère nature”. His first encounter with art started at the age of ten, when he moved away from his family to the capital of Senegal, Dakar, to study. To sate his nostalgia for the green flora, wild fauna– the nature by his village, he started to reproduce and create his own environment by drawings and paintings.

From 2009 to 2014 Diack studied fine art at École Nationale des Arts de Dakar (ENA). During these years, his self-taught, intuitive drawing style, in combination with rigor and consistent endurance/working rhythm he learned from ENA, developed into a strong identified visual method to express himself. His main sujet and motifs in his paintings are animals and nature– often camouflaging, sometimes awakening from the ground or even dissolving in the air. He creates multilayered landscape by combining patches of colour with concrete lines and scattering of pigments. Pigments, which are made of dead plants and trees, often used for medical purposes in Senegal.
